Piano Tuning, Servicing & Repair
Piano Tuning
After an initial assessment of your piano's pitch, touch, and tone, our technician will tune it to standard pitch (A440). We will then discuss any concerns on touch and tone, and be able to answer any specific questions about the instrument. Pianos should be tuned once or twice a year, more if it is being used frequently (e.g., by university music students and concert pianists). Standard tuning will typically take approximately 1 hour.
PIANO SERVICING
Additional maintenance of your piano helps restore its mechanical sensitivity and tone. It involves regulation (adjusting the mechanism to ensure the keys are as responsive as possible), voicing (ensuring the hammers meet the strings for an even and beautiful tone every time), and regular tuning.
PIANO REPAIR
Anything from reshaping worn hammers to replacing broken strings. No matter how minor the problem, we are here to help.
PIANO RESTORATION
Older or heavily used pianos may benefit from extensive restoration work. Our technician will need to inspect the instrument first before providing you with recommendations and a quote.
our Steinway Piano Technician, HAWKE TSE
Introducing Yunhang Xie, our new piano technician at Steinway & Sons New Zealand. A highly skilled piano technician, Yunhang holds a BFA in Piano Tuning and Restoration from the Central Conservatory of Music. His extensive experience includes working at Steinway & Sons Asia Pacific Headquarters, where he trained in Hamburg Steinway factory techniques, conducted quality inspections, and mastered Steinway-specific tuning and voicing methods.
Yunhang has restored multiple grand pianos, including Steinway & Sons models, to factory standards by sourcing and crafting original-spec parts in collaboration with manufacturers. He has also provided technical support for high-profile events such as the Lang Lang Piano Masterclass and a Piano Marathon Concert, earning Outstanding Behind-the-Scenes Staff Awards for his contributions.
In addition to his technical expertise, Yunhang has experience in piano education and tuning instruction, having trained students in German Steinway tuning theories and developed new voicing methods. His deep understanding of piano mechanics, regulation, and tonal optimization ensures that every Steinway piano is maintained to the highest performance standards.
