TUTOR SPOTLIGHT: KINGSLEY TANG
Lewis Eady Music School tutor Kingsley Tang wants you to know that it is possible to have music as a major part of your life, even after you ‘finish the grades’. He has been teaching piano at our Great South Road studios since 2015, maintains a career in finance and supply chain, and is dad to a gorgeous 9-month-old daughter!
LEMS: Let's start from the beginning!
KINGSLEY: I taught my first piano student back in 2003. Teaching has always been and still is a lot of fun, and time definitely flies when you're having fun!
I received my ATCL diploma with distinction in piano teaching and have been an associate member of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers of New Zealand (IRMTNZ) for the last 13 years. I teach piano at Lewis Eady Music School on Saturdays and also at my private music studio.
LEMS: Who inspired you to teach?
KINGSLEY: My piano teacher and mentor, Christy Yau, definitely inspired me to follow the path of music teaching. I was one of the first graduates from her successful student-teacher programme in her Christchurch teaching studio. Christy opened my eyes to the world of teaching with her passion and enthusiasm, and I am always grateful to have learned so much from her. Even though I'm now in Auckland, we still catch up in person at least once a year at the annual IRMT teachers' conference!
LEMS: What do you do when you are not teaching at the LEMS?
KINGSLEY: I have a career in finance and supply chain. I'm certainly engaging different parts of my brain in my various roles, as well as perfecting my time management! I strive to be a positive role model for my students (and my gorgeous 9-month-old daughter!) and prove that it is possible to have music as a major part of your life, even after you 'finish the grades'.
LEMS: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
KINGSLEY: I will still be nurturing the next generation of musicians. In 10 years, perhaps some of my students will also be inspired to take up the rewarding profession of music education!
It’s never too early (or late!) to learn a musical instrument.
Enrol for music lessons with us this year and learn a skill for life!
