GUITARS FOR BEGINNERS
GUITARS FOR BEGINNERS
Author: Gemma Lee, Lewis Eady Music School Manager
Whether strumming chords or picking out melodies, the guitar provides immediate gratification and a sense of accomplishment. The guitar’s popularity is also due to its portability and the quick progress students often experience, which keeps motivation high. These are some of the reasons we encourage students to purchase their own instruments rather than hire, as owning your own instrument allows for more consistent practice and a deeper personal connection to the music.
Your very own instrment
We recommend purchasing an instrument, whether you are a beginner or not, to ensure you get the best start in your musical journey.
Here are some tips on how you can find the perfect fit:
Seating and Placement: Sit on a stool with your back straight. The guitar should sit on your lap, with the back of the guitar resting against the stomach/chest.
Arm Position: Drape your right arm over the body of the guitar to reach the strings comfortably. Your arm should rest so that your hand is above the sound hole or the pickups without straining.
Left Hand Position: Place your left hand on the fretboard. You should be able to reach at least the first few frets without stretching uncomfortably. The thumb should rest on the back of the guitar neck, allowing the fingers to curl and press the strings comfortably.
Strumming and Fretting: Can you strum with the right hand and press down on the strings with the left hand? You should be able to do both without excessive strain.
Evaluate Comfort and Adjust Accordingly: Can you reach all the necessary parts of the guitar easily? Do you feel like they have to stretch too much to play? If the guitar seems too large or too small based on these observations, consider trying a different size.
